Hi, I'm looking at developing a micro hydro site adjacent to my house. I will be studying the site throught the next year and hope to begin building the equipment this winter. My first measurements show: 24 feet of head over 350 feet of length. I could develop a little more head over a little more distance. Minimum flow in a normal year 75 gallons per minute. Quite a bit more than that in the winter and spring. Issues I will encounter: The stream is at the bottom of a ravine and the pipe/penstock will have to follow the course of the stream, I will not be able to bury it and any cover will get washed away in the spring. I live in a cold Vermont climate. I will need to generate hi voltage to cover the distance from the stream to my house [about 500 feet.] I'd like to put the equipment together myself [as opposed to buying a commercial unit] I am on the grid and don't need to generate all my power , but once I'm doing it would like to get as much as I can. Questions, best type of runner? cheapest penstock pipe, [preferably flexible]? protection from cold? best generator/altenator? Can I avoid batteries? Any plans for appropriate systems for these parameters I could study? Best books? I guess that's plenty of questions to start with .I have access to machine shop, wood shop and welding equipment and use all on a regualr basis. Thanks in advance for any advice. David Scheckman
