After years of manually doing the design calculations for our Banki-crossflow
sites I developed my own software and have found it very useful especially in
evaluating alternative possible configurations. It has been provided to a
number of people (mostly university students) and each time I have endeavoured
to make it a little more user friendly and it now comes as an Excel workbook,
comprising a number of interconnected worksheets and with a detailed user
manual.

It employs a "power train" approach, where each step in the transformation of
power from hydraulic input to electrical output is described and analysed. The
performance of any design can be rapidly evaluated over a range of head and
flows. It is intended as an aid to finding the optimum design for a single
turbine that is required to operate well over a possibly wide range of head and
flows - being a typical requirement for a crossflow site. Whilst intended for
Banki-crossflow turbines powering DC battery charging systems, it can be easily
adapted to other types of turbine and charging regimes.

The Excel workbook is at:

and the design manual is at

I hope those who are interested in Manfred's software will find this a useful
complement. Any feedback will be most welcome.
