Phillip,

Car alternators might turn at 5000 rpm when charging starts; what's yours?
The wheel might turn at 50 rpm. That's a 100 to one ratio. Usually step-up
is limited to 6:1, requiring multiple stages. At eight feet tall, consider a
wood pulley rim drive of 96 inches.

A 2:1 pulley increaser (16 inch driving 8 inch, & 8 inch has twice the rpm
of the 16 inch) in between would then reach 96/8*50 rpm = 600 rpm on the 8
inch pulley. The alternator pulley might be 2 inches. 8/2*600 = 1200 rpm,
which would likely be too slow by 4.

This is getting too hard. Another 16 inch pulley mounted on the 8 inch
pulley shaft turning at 600 rpm could drive a 2 inch that would increase
speed by 16/2*600 rpm = 4800, which is in the right range. Takes a lot of
parts and belts.

This is very rough, but should give you the idea. Might be better to get a
different generator with higher volts per rpm.

Frank
