Any advice please on our potential (not meant as a pun !)for generating electricity ? We have an ancient mill in the middle of a town in Devon, England, with 5 metre by 1 metre wide wheel (1888 manufacture) still working but idling only. We want to do a microhydro scheme. Our leat is 1200 metres long and I have checked the data daily over the last year and the water runs at the mill headrace between 50 and 150 litres per second. The usable drop (head) is only the section near the mill about 25 metres in length, and is 4 metres head to position of "turbine" (next to the wheel) and a further 3 metres MAY be possible if we use a draft tube on the tailrace side (another landowner). I am guessing that a six inch penstock and enclosed crossflow turbine is the best arrangement but would welcome any suggestions please ? I would rather not use the wheel, keeping that idling for the tourists only. We've had a pre-feasibility study done which confirms the flow I've recorded. Sorry if this is a site for "run of river" people only, but I've got to start somewhere ? Many thanks, Bob.
