Hi Beth

The standard desktop mapping software is called ArcGIS. The (amazing!) GIF 
(Geospatial Informatics Facility) has a campus license. 
http://gif.berkeley.edu.  You should send your faculty there - they have lots 
of very helpful people to assist.
