Welcome to Midrange Server, Our Wintel/Lintel Platform Newsletter
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Back in 1996, when publishing a Web-based newsletter was first possible, I launched a Windows and Unix platform newsletter, called Midrange Server. This was also the name of my fledgling publishing company, too, which stayed in business for 18 months, but then went dormant because I never reached a critical mass of advertisers or subscribers. This week, Midrange Server is back with a vengeance, and you are among the thousands of subscribers to this new publication who have asked to receive it.

HP's Fiorina, IBM's Zeitler Pay Tribute to Linux at LinuxWorld
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Carly Fiorina, the embattled chairman and CEO of Hewlett Packard who is trying to merge the company with rival Compaq, used her keynote address at the LinuxWorld trade show in New York last week to make her case for the HP-Compaq merger and to pay tribute to the Linux operating system and the developers who make it happen. Bill Zeitler, who is in charge of IBM's Server Group, also delivered a keynote espousing Big Blue's support of Linux, which is a prime example of enlightened self-interest.

Oracle to Boot Out Unix Servers for Linux Servers, Ellison Says
by Kristin Palitza

Chief executive Larry Ellison said last week that Oracle is going to base its "entire business on Linux." The giant is planning to enable the majority of its business applications and its 9i application server on Intel-based servers running Linux in the next few months. Those Lintel servers will replace three servers from Hewlett Packard that run the HP-UX Unix variant, Ellison said during an analyst conference at its Redwood Shores, California headquarters.

HP-Compaq Merger Clears Another Legal Hurdle With EC Approval
by Sinad Carew

The European Commission last week gave its blessing to the merger of Hewlett Packard and Compaq. After a month-long examination, the EC regulator ruled that the $23 billion merger does not pose any threat to competition in the PC, printer, or server markets in Europe. The companies were spared the agony of what could have been a four-month investigation, and now can concentrate on a higher hurdle--convincing their own shareholders.

Microsoft Gathers Inner Circle of Mobile Developers
by Sinad Carew

Microsoft announced last week that it is creating an inner circle of partners from its already extensive gang of mobile software developers. Microsoft said it has recruited 110 members, which it feels have made "significant investments and inroads in the mobility space" to the mobility partner advisory council (MPaC). The mobile developers create applications for Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002, its Windows based Smartphone 2002, and its Mobile Information Server.

Gerstner Hands IBM's Reins to Palmisano, Keeps the Spurs
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The speculation about when IBM will name a replacement for chairman and CEO Louis Gerstner is over. IBM last week tapped Sam Palmisano, its president and chief operating officer, as CEO, effective March 1. Palmisano will assume the role of chairman by year's end. Exactly how Palmisano's ascent will affect IBM's positioning of Wintel and Lintel platforms is as unclear as it was two years ago, when it became apparent that Palmisano would end up running Big Blue.

CA Makes Fierce Push into Linux Territory
by Kristin Palitza

Computer Associates has made clear that it thinks the time for Linux has come. The systems management software developer made a major commitment to the Linux community when it announced last week 23 Linux-supporting products and said that Linux will be part of every new product release. The move comes after an increased demand for Linux on IBM mainframes and Intel-based servers.

Telco Giants Gather to Boost Carrier-Grade Linux
by Kristin Palitza

In an effort to tailor Linux to the carrier and data center market, four major network equipment vendors have decided to take part in a newly created technical working group of the Open Source Development Lab (OSDL). The deal will improve Linux for the telecommunications sector and might make open source more applicable to the high-end server market, too.

IBM Bows Alpha Code For Web Services on Windows and Linux
by Joe Hertvik

IBM recently released three new Windows and Linux alpha programs for Web services--Internet applications that can communicate with each other and perform transactions without human intervention or additional programming--on its AlphaWorks site. These tools were created to provide a Web services development, runtime, hosting, and gateway environment for developers and service providers.

HP Launches Low-Cost Entry Server for Windows, Linux
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Hewlett Packard has tried to take a little business away from rival Dell in the entry Wintel and Lintel server market with the new "Eagle III" tc2100 server, which debuted last week. The tc2100 server, which uses either Celeron or Pentium III processors from Intel, has a starting street price of only $649. But even at this low price, sources at HP say that the company can make money selling the Eagle III servers, predominantly to small and medium businesses.
