Turbolinux Sells Linux OS Biz, Caldera Changes Name to SCO Group

It's been a busy couple of days in the commercial Linux distributor business. First, Turbolinux announced last week that it has sold that Linux business to Software Research Associates, one of the oldest software developers in Japan. Then early this week Caldera International, the merger between Linux distributor Caldera and the former Unix operating system provider Santa Cruz Operation, announced that it was changing its name to The SCO Group and presumably moving some of its focus back to Unix. Compaq Adds Dual-Processor Blades to ProLiant BLs

Hewlett-Packard this week announced that it has delivered the first dual-processor blade servers for inclusion in its "QuickBlade" ProLiant BL line. Up until now, HP has only been able to deliver uniprocessor blades in these machines, and the advent of dual-processor blades will, HP hopes, allow the company to expand the use of its blade servers from relatively light infrastructure workloads like print, file, and Web serving to application serving and maybe even lightweight database serving. Dell Ships $600 Small Business Server

Dell on Monday announced two new additions to its PowerEdge line of servers with preloaded Windows or Linux operating systems. The low-end PowerEdge 600SC is a uni-processor tower that Dell has priced extraordinarily low--it starts at $599--in hopes of attracting small business customers, while the PowerEdge 2600, with up to two Intel Xeon processors, is geared toward workgroup and departmental computing. Microsoft Readies New Web Services Tools

Microsoft is forging ahead on different fronts to bring its .NET Framework to fruition. On Monday, Microsoft announced a beta release of the Web Services Development Kit, a collection of APIs that allow Visual Studio.NET programmers to incorporate new Web services specifications developed by Microsoft, IBM, and others, into Web services applicationss. The Redmond, Washington, software giant is also readying the next release of its Visual Studio .NET development environment, code-named "Everett," for availability early next year. READ MORE >
