HP Talks Up Its Itanium Plans At Intel Developer Forum

Hewlett-Packard has from the very beginning been the most loyal and enthusiastic supporter of Intel's 64-bit Itanium processor family, and yesterday, at the Intel Developer Forum in San Jose, California, HP staked its future in the midrange and enterprise server space on a new chipset for Itaniums and a new method of doubling up Itanium processors in a server without substantial changes in servers that support Itanium 2 chips. HP Announces Next-Generation Eight-Way Xeon Servers

Customers who have been using the current crop of Pentium III Xeon eight-way servers, which are based on the "Profusion" chipset developed by Intel and the former Compaq (now part of Hewlett-Packard), got some breathing space as HP announced its "F8" chipset for Pentium 4 Xeon MP servers. The new machines, which use the 2 GHz "Gallatin" series of Xeon MP chips, offer up to 66 percent more OLTP power than the current 900 MHz Pentium III Xeons and the Profusion chipset. READ MORE >

IBM Sells 5,000 Blade Servers, Fleshes Out Future Plans

IBM may not be one of the first companies to enter the nascent blade server market, but it has undoubtedly found a lot of prospective tire kickers, early adopters, and enthusiasts for the blade server concept. The company says that it has shipped 5,000 blade servers in the 10 weeks that it has been shipping product, and that it is talking up its future plans for the BladeCenter platform, including four-way 32-bit Xeon MP and two-way 64-bit Power and Itanium blades. EMC Launches New Symmetrix DMX Disk Arrays

EMC, the storage hardware vendor that has been dogged by declining sales since the dot-com blowout, pulled a rabbit out of its hat two weeks ago and announced a radical redesign of its high-end Symmetrix disk array based on its new high-speed Direct Matrix (DMX) architecture.
