PeopleSoft Pays $1.7 Billion to Buy Rival J.D. Edwards
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

In the application software market, three plus four equals two now that PeopleSoft has announced it will acquire rival enterprise software maker J.D. Edwards for $1.7 in stock. PeopleSoft is the third biggest application provider in the world with $1.9 billion in sales in the past 12 months, and JDE is number four, with $886 million in sales. The merger of these two companies vaults PeopleSoft over former number two Oracle, but PeopleSoft will still be considerably behind number one SAP, which booked 7.4 billion euros in revenues in 2002 (about $8.7 billion at current exchange rates). IBM Debuts Entry pSeries 615 Server with Power4+ Chip
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM last week completed the revamping of its pSeries Unix server line with its dual-core Power4 processor family with the announcement of the pSeries 615 entry server. IBM rolled out its first Power4-based machine at the high end in late 2001 with the 32-way "Regatta-h" pSeries 690 server, and has been putting variants of the Power4 design into smaller machines since that time. And now it has it. READ MORE >

IBM to Build Telecom-Compliant BladeCenter Blade Servers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Sources at IBM say the company is working with blade server developer partner Intel to create a special version of its BladeCenter blade server chassis. The new BladeCenter T servers will meet the stringent requirements of telecom companies and the network equipment suppliers with customers in telephone and other communications services. With these servers and the carrier-grade Linux on Intel-based blades, IBM hopes to take away business from Sun Microsystems, which dominates the telecom space. READ MORE >

HP, Opsware Ally to Chase Their Own Utility Computing Dreams
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Opsware, a private company specializing in tools for managing operating systems and application software, yesterday announced a key strategic alliance as it inked a deal with IT infrastructure maker Hewlett-Packard. While Opsware and HP have been working together informally, HP will now be bolting the Opsware System onto its Utility Data Center product for virtualizing and provisioning servers, storage, and network bandwidth. Why does working invigorate some people while draining others? Research suggests that a lack of clear criteria for job selection greatly contributes to these outcomes and that they are emblematic of a poorly understood condition we casually call burnout.
