Well, I failed more than once creating a new user with only
a small part of the form filled in (usally first- and
lastname as well as an email address). As Richard Yaker put
it:

Modifying existing users worked.
I 'solved' that problem by filling in every single field
with useless stuff that I later deleted.
Now, with your patch applied to midgard-php, I was able to
create a new user with only a few fields supplied.
Strange.
