This would indeed be a great place to use symlinks. But it would still
leave the issue of multiple scheduling dates per article.

If the symlinks were present (which would have their own ID), it would
be feasible to have a separate database table (not in the Midgard DB, I
think) that would hold rows like [ID, startdate, stopdate]. You could
then use these instead of the built-in start and stop days.
