I may be a bit confused on what you are trying to do, but it seems that you
should be able to do it by making the page associated with the -- let's call
it a sub-root topic -- the topic to which you want to add subtopics -- thingy
-- an active page.
Put some code-init logic into the page to decide what topic or subtopic is
being viewed -- this is simple if the depth is only 2 (topic and set of
subtopics) -- a little more complicated (walking the "up" until you reach the
"sub-root topic") if the depth is greater.
Then, recode the page display to do different things according to where in the
subtree you are.
Since you didn't mention anything about the layout being different for the
subtopics, why would you want to create a different page? Is there something
on the site that is dependent on the existence of particular pages
corresponding to particular topics?
