The way he describes it is close -- RH stores apache config info
in /etc/httpd/conf. SuSE (which uses RPM but saying it's RH based

For the original RH layout, correct. The best way to see how the
originals were installed, get the source RPM
(SRPMS/apache-1.3.9-17mdk.src.rpm from a mandrake server or mirror) and
install that. You'll find the spec file in /usr/src/*/SPEC I believe,
which will describe to the last detail how they have setup and compiled
it.
