Thanks for your comments, but that doesn't work on my system:

gcc: /usr/lib/mysql: file or directory not found
apxs:Break: Command failed with rc=65536
make: *** [libphp3.so] Error 1    

Therefore I used this ugly Makefile hack (replace /usr/lib/mysql with /usr/lib)

Hm, I have gdlib 1.7.3-3 from the SuSE CDs and got no compile error. The
difference between our systems is that you rebuilt Apache, I'm using the SuSE
RPM. Perhaps is your compile error related with this?
