I guess you're right, we should move to png. Midgard doesn't use gif
images itself BTW but will happily allow Apache to serve them. The
images used in the admin site are indeed gifs.

There was a big uproar about it a while ago, yes. GIFs are not
dead, you must just make sure that they were made with software
that has purchased a license from Compuserve (or whoever owns
the patent today) to create them. GPL imaging problems like
the Gimp could introduce licensing problems but if you've used
Photoshop, PhotoPaint, and I believe even PaintShop Pro you
should be OK.
