Hi all,

Boy, I didn't mean to stir up a hornet's nest! But it's good discussion.

(I've put up a newer version at http://www.tchp.org/testEditor.php.)

First, if you want to see Midgard's biggest competitor (IMHO - or is Midgard
Userland's competitor?) go see http://www.editthispage.com, which runs on
Userland Frontier, a component of which is Manila. Manila does what Midgard
does - separate the content contributors from the designers (that is what
Midgard does, isn't it?).

I started the JavaScript editor because my mother is loathe to contribute to
my vwbus.editthispage.com site because she doesn't know (or really want to
learn) how to make text bold, or create links, etc.

I intended the editor to be included on an admin page style/structure, so
when a page is being edited in a text box your editor can easily stick in
proper HTML.

I can just as easily add it to my Editthispage.com site as to my Midgard
site. It loads with the page. Nothing complex about it. Use PHP as an
if/then - pseudocode: if(personIsEditor) { echo "buttons and javascript"; }.

If there is an easier way possible for a lay-person (non-HTML-savvy) to add
content with formatting to a story, I'll use it.

I was aware that there would be Netscape issues, but I don't have the
resources to test all possible combinations of platform or browser. And I'm
no JavaScript guru (obvious, no?). Please help me - like in the previous
post with a "FYI: a quick peek at my O'Reilly Javascript book says there is
a Document.getSelection() method that will work in Netscape 4. It should be
possible." help. ... :)

I really like the idea of editing pages "in situ", rather than having to
visit two sites (on different ports of the same server, or whatever) at
once. If the Midgard developers want to add that capability...woo-hoo!

Thanks,

I had an interesting idea about the whole editing-in-midgard thing...

What if we could have "embedded" editing, much in the spirit of edit-this-
page stuff (hereafter referred to as ETP), without having to rewrite every
single part of a midgard site, or go out of our way to add the
functionality?
