LibGD is a Graphic Generation Library. It let you generate .png images
with regular drawing commands like an UI. An advantage of LibGD is, that
it has an PHP Interface, that you can use to generate images on-the-fly
with php3 scripts. The last major change in libgd was from 1.5 to 1.6
where the support for .gif images was removed due to copyright issues.

I think it's either a little error in the php3-patch of 1.2.6b2 or you
have an incorrect version of libgd. You could try it with the unpached
php3 to eliminate the second issue.
