Yes, I ran into this once...I was compiling from source and had the exact same
problem... while compiling php, I didn't specify --with-apache=/path/to/apache
as an option to the configure script.  That caused apache to silently die as
soon as it started, just as you say.

Check out the spec from the SRPM and see if the --with-apache option is
specified.  If not, specify it, rebuild the rpm and see if it works...
