mod_perl adds about a jillion gigabytes to the size of the apache which is
propagated for each child process. This is one of the reasons I exterminated
it and went to PHP (and then discovered midgard -- o joy!).
I was never able to successfully build both mod_perl and PHP as DSOs on
Solaris -- might be different on linux, and might work if one disables the
apache ssi -- I didn't care enough to pursue it.
My suggestion is to either keep a separate server which does mod_perl type
stuff from the php/midgard server, or to have a look at the php slash-dot-like
thingy which is called phpslash and can be located from the php projects page
(I think).
Others may have other opinions.
