It didn't.  However, the problem lay clearly in MySQL.  I don't really care what 
wasn't going right, all I know is that the current "stable" debian packages for mysql 
are not very good.  They are very behind.  I jumped across to a full install of the 
unstable ones after trying a number of things and it works fine now.
