You can do that now by assigning appropriate ownership rights but the
authors will still be able to browse around the admin site. If you
want full separation you'll need to develop a custom site for that.

You don't need to enable sitegroups. You'll want sitegroups if you'll
be serving multiple, logically separate sites from one database and you
want to keep the users from each separate. If you're only serving one
site you don't need sitegroups, but it doesn't hurt either.

They're legacy fields. You can use them for anything you like.
