nope there is nothing - keep in mind I am now down
to the generic httpd.conf file that comes with apache
which does not have a single AddModule word in it.

OK - you are right - as it turns out it was a "mysqladmin -uroot reload"
-recording other changes that actually made the difference - not the
entry in /etc/passwd
