Good morning,
The bird is definitely an Empidonax flycatcher so you are
barking up the right family tree. You were also correct in using habitat to
help identify this flycatcher. Here's the catch...When id'ing empidonax
definitively, you need the call. While habit and behavior are good indicators,
many of their habitats will overlap. As an example, Least and Willow or Alder
and Acadian will occupy the same areas. The likelihood is that you had a Least
or Willow, but did it say "chi-bek" or "fits-bew".. The Petersons CD to bird
calls of eastern North America is a great aid in learning these calls as well
as many others. Although I am partial to Sibley guides, the peterson's also
describe these calls well. You can also get these calls online as a reference
if you look around.

Nice photo, but all I or another birder can say for sure is Empidonax.

HAVE A GREAT DAY AND GOOD BIRDING.

Subject: [MidHudsonBirds] Flycatcher Help

Hi everyone,

I was going through my Peach Hill photos from today and noticed that I had
photographed some sort of flycatcher. The eye ring is slim but definitely
visible. Overall color was an olive gray. Using Sibley's, it sort of looks like
an Alder or Willow, but habitat (bushy area on main trail) indicates it being
more likely a Willow Flycatcher.

I posted the photo in the ID help folder for a second and/or third opinion.
Thanks in advance! :)
