There were at least twenty Great Egrets along the George Freer Beach in Port Ewen yesterday evening. Many were feeding on the huge masses of water chestnut which is about to be cut up by a specially designed boat that is currently there, so this weekend may be your last chance. In the distance across the river you can see the Astor estate and perhaps do some star gazing. All I saw was a bunch of cows on the sprawling lawn. Another good viewing point would be the Kingston Point Rotary Park. Lots of gulls around, mostly Ring-billed, but you might get lucky with a Bonaparte's. Some of the buoys are full of DC Cormorants. Also many swallows and waxwings, and BG Gnatcatchers seem to be more active now. Congratulations to the happy couple. I wish them well, but more importantly I wish the birds well as they head south.
