Michael, I'm probably not the "esteemed" Mifnetter you had in mind but, like
you, I'm not convinced either. I can't see how the company's claim that take
off performance is not significantly compromised by dragging the extra weight.
If the towed "trailer" aircraft was just an un-engined, unmanned aerodynamic
box then maybe there are some savings in crew and airframe costs but if you
still need a fully manned, fully functional aircraft as the trailer then I
would have thought any fuel savings would be relatively minor and not worth the
hassle. The big turn off for me though was when I heard the commentary mention
the "AC-0 Streamlined Attachment System", then realised this was just a rather
elaborate name for a tow rope. That was me out. I'd rather save my spare money
for investment in those sub-$40-per-trip e-taxi companies you criticise that
seem to go bust with predictable regularity. The concept seems to be along the
lines of what I refer to as those meth-head aerodynamacists that think two
large aircraft flying in close line astern formation will save fuel owing to
slipstreaming, "just like birds do". Clearly none of them has ever asked any
pilot who has ever flown in formation, loose or tight, which aircraft uses the
most fuel. The answer is the wingman. Always. Simon
