And yes, the system is broken, but something only each individual airline
can fix. And while airlines (and ATC) look for better Defect Correction
solutions, they miss the point that the only successful path forward is
Defect Prevention and not better technology or interfaces focused on Defect
Correction.

Also, the dispatcher overload Daniel describes is the same as the controller
overload, e.g., trying to better manage Defect Correction.

And of course, better Defect Correction is needed, since no matter how much
Defect Prevention can be applied, stuff happens. But Correction must be
secondary to Prevention.

That said, most of the airline dispatcher "day of" overload Daniel outlines
so well is absolutely preventable.

And focusing on flooding dispatchers with the "20 tabs" follows what Dr.
Russ Ackoff said, "The righter we do the wrong thing", the wronger we
become".

Consider that most airline delay that creates airport, ramp and gate
overloads is preventable.

Therefore, given the much larger upside of Defect Prevention, one would
think that airlines would be all over Defect Prevention.

Of course, this would require airlines to identify the root cause of most of
their delays and chaos.

Airlines could. Airlines should. Airlines refuse.

Below is from a Defect Prevention Versus Defect Correction Google search.

Defect prevention and correction are two distinct approaches to managing
defects in quality management.

Defect prevention focuses on identifying and eliminating the root causes of
defects before they occur, thereby preventing the recurrence of similar
issues. This proactive approach is essential in quality management systems
(QMS).

Defect correction, on the other hand, is a reactive measure taken after a
defect has been identified. While correction addresses the immediate issue,
it does not necessarily eliminate the root cause of the defect.

In summary, defect prevention is a systematic and proactive strategy aimed
at preventing defects, while defect correction is a reactive response to
defects that have already occurred.

Airline dispatchers and ATC controllers need more Defect Prevention so they
will have much less Defect Correction.
