May I add that the antipathy was mutual from Pratt & Whitney’s side?

I asked Sel Berson, CEO of P&W Commercial Engines, and Nick Tomasetti,
Executive Vice President, “What are we doing about Pratt & Whitney’s
relationship with American Airlines?” Berson’s response: “Fuck ‘em; they’re not
a customer!”

I said, “Excuse me? Last I counted, they are operating more than 1,000 Pratt &
Whitney engines – and nobody else comes close.”

Berson: “They haven’t bought any big engines from us in a while.” My retort:
“You withdrew from the A300-600R competition and no-bid the B767-300ER – how
can they buy an engine from you?”

Berson: “Fuck ‘em, anyway.”

Bob

Oh yes, you remember correctly. A P&W subsidiary financed several of the 757s
at TWA (along with Boeing Capital) and at Northwest, in both cases along with
other aircraft types. The last hurrah of the pre-9/11 era, before we moved
into the post-9/11 bankruptcy era. The bankruptcies of both resulted in more
complicated work than I care to remember - in TWA’s case because of the
futility of recovery and the dealing with AMR; in the NW case because of the
negotiation of continuing a financing commitment to a bankrupt airline - we got
out ahead of that, to our later relief.

Few probably remember that TWA ordered the PW6000-powered Airbus A318. I lost
a lot of brain cells on that deal too. For my sins I have a TWA A318 model in
my collection. (I also have a BA A318 model from another ill-fated PW6000
arrangement.)

And of course AA (AMR) hated P&W from the top down, if you catch my drift -
there was no grey area with Bob Crandall. No way they would choose P&W power
for their 757s. Earlier I was at BAe when AMR inherited the Air Cal BAe 146s,
and he made his distaste clear. Then when I joined P&W, I learned all about
his disgust for our parts costs for those JT8s that powered all those beautiful
Mad Dogs.

Memories of many, many Friday night flights home to IAD aboard one of those
comfortable Mad Dogs after a few days of corporate warfare in Fort Worth.

If I remember correctly the 757s in the AA fleet at the time were powered by
RR, while the TWA and NW were P&W.
