The newspaper report states:"The pilot has now returned to flying after an
investigation found there was no security threat."He will have been suspended
(without prejudice) during the investigation but that's normal protocol for any
company investigations.Mind you, the report doesn't state he is flying again
for BA. I've known of a few pilot firings recently when the pilot has been
reported to be "back flying" but it turned out to be with a different company.

One reason pilots decide to do stupid things is that they're cheap. This guy
could have rented some simulator time. His family could have watched him handle
engine failures, hydraulic failures, TCAS RAs....lots more fun than watching
the gear and flaps come up then auto pilot on.

For the mifnetters around the DC area there is a 737 simulator which costs
about $150/hour near Rockville. It's a real 737-800 cockpit and the visuals are
fantastic. While you sit in the left seat the monitor sits in the right seat
with an ipad from which he runs the software. With only 6-ft long jacks you get
only gentle motion from it but it does actually move. You could probably split
S into the ground and not feel much to be honest, because more motion probably
means more maintenance.

I don't know how functional are the switches because we didn't try to run
any emergencies. My light airplane friends had their hands full as it was.
Maybe next time.

Sadly, like all people, that's true. Pity there's always that 5% or so in
the profession that are retarded enough to tarnish the rest. Maybe they're the
ones that have been sniffing the chemtrail fumes.

I mean, what's wrong with mounting a GoPro like many others which you can
also hook into the intercom and radio?

I'd be interested to know exactly what sanctions, if any, were given to
him. To both pilots, in fact, as the other had to be in agreement. Add to that
the senior cabin crew member who could have insisted or even phoned the company
before take off when they knew what was going on?

On the limited information we have it appears a cut and dried case for
summary (ie instant) dismissal, perhaps for both pilots, and possibly
suspension of their licences as this is a clear violation of regulations.
Actions like this immediately brings into question whether each is a "fit and
proper person" to hold an ATPL. (Yes, that is one of the criteria for an ATPL
and Class 1 medical).

British Airways Pilot Left Cockpit Door Open So His Family Could
See Him At The Controls... And He's Still Allowed To Fly
A British Airways pilot operating an international flight to New
York JFK allegedly left the cockpit door open during takeoff so his family
members who were passengers on the packed plane could watch him at the
controls. Sources told The Sun that the cockpit door remained open for a
“significant” amount of time after takeoff…
