| The 171-mile Merced-to-Bakersfield stretch of high-speed rail could begin passenger service by Jan. 1, 2032, according to a report released Friday by the state agency administering the project. That’s almost two years earlier than the Dec. 31, 2033, deadline the California High-Speed Rail Authority has been working to satisfy in the Central Valley, where construction is active on 119 miles and the first tracks are planned to be laid next year.
