Yesterday was the 80th anniversary of Japan's formal surrender aboard the
battleship USS Missouri. If you are interested in the details of how the
difficult decision to drop the A-bombs was made and how the Japanese
surrender came to be despite active opposition from within the Japanese
military leadership even after the two bombs were dropped, read Road to
Surrender by Evan Thomas, which is based on what is said to be original
research in the U.S. and Japan. The story could easily have turned out
worse for all involved.
Particularly fascinating is the description of the last-minute effort by
some in the Japanese military leadership to keep the Emperor from making his
famous radio announcement.
