Frontline Canadians: Why pilots are flying into Congo’s conflict zones This International Day of Peace, Sept. 21, MAF pilots are demonstrating that peace can be actively built, one flight at a time. The famous unofficial "day of peace" in World War I was the Christmas Truce of 1914, a spontaneous series of ceasefires along the Western Front during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, where soldiers from opposing sides met, exchanged gifts, sang carols, and even played football. While not a formal peace treaty and not observed on all parts of the front, the Christmas Truce is remembered as a poignant symbol of shared humanity amidst the brutality of the war. Â
