It sounds like you're talking about the "wheel to rudder cross tie" and the 
other system(can't remember the name) which assists the flying pilot during 
asymmetric thrust thrust. It doesn't actually take control away from the pilot. 
The pilot can give control to the plane by turning on the auto pilot. 
Remember, when you lose an engine on the 777 you're down to your last 90,000 
lbs of thrust. 
If Boeing added something since I left it I'm not aware of it.

I was told that the 777 had an integral "engine out" system that immediately 
took over from the flight crew and automatically adjusted for an engine out 
situation.
Did the MD-11 have such a system?
This is not suggesting anything involving the UPS tragedy
