Regulation 261/2004 establishes common rules for compensation and assistance to 
passengers in the event of denied boarding, flight cancellations, or long 
delays.
 
It applies to all EU flights, including those departing from non-EU countries 
with a destination in the EU. 
 
Compensation amounts range from €250 to €600, depending on the flight distance. 
 
Passengers are entitled to compensation for delays of at least three hours, 
cancellations, or being denied boarding due to overbooking. 
 
The regulation also mandates that airlines provide refreshments and 
accommodation where appropriate. 
 
Claims can be filed directly with the airline or through specialized flight 
compensation companies.

Well, hasn’t the new year started with a flurry?  We need to think about 
Greenland, and thus European defence, and thus supply chains.  At least or 
discussion of these complex topics come with a reading suggestion.
 
We also need to think about what is happening with Reg261.  That process, which 
started in 2014, is now in the Last Chance Saloon.  If the Council (and thus 
the airlines) do not blink and concede on something (maybe everything) the 
reform lapses completely, taking us all the way back to square 1.  Tricky.
 
Furthermore, we need to celebrate Lufthansa’s centenary. 
 
But first, it being the start of the year, we should indulge in the grand 
tradition of trying to make predictions for the year.  We suggest using the 
Roadrunner and his long-time foil, Wile E Coyote for that task.  They give us 
the framework we need to see what might happen.
