keady -repeating my take on all this. The real chokepoint is runways. For
example LAX has four runways, 2 for landing and two for takeoffs. Because of
the configuration this really can't be changed - it's two takeoffs and two
landings. Thus assuming 40 operations per hour,* LAX can takeoff total of 80
flights per hour but what if six airlines all want to takeoff at 0700? There's
a  series of cascading delays starting right there,
The solution isn't that complicated. Tell the airlines to  meet and fairly
figure it out among themselves. And stop blaming ATC for any lack of asphalt

Cliff,

Having flown into ORD 100s of times as a United Captain, ORD is not full. In
fact, in my 45-year career as a pilot, I have never flown into an airport that
was full. Overloaded intermittently - absolutely, full - never. There is a
difference.

The problem is not airport capacity, but the inefficient use of the capacity.

Drilling down further, the root cause of most airline delays are the random
point overloads of our aviation assets (airports, airspace, ramp, gates, etc.)
that are predictable hours prior, “day of”. But, more importantly, these
overloads are easily preventable, but only each individual airline can do it
efficiently.

In other words, aviation is looking at the delay problem incorrectly,
unnecessarily wasting aircraft productivity, jet fuel, labor, airport capacity
and profits, costing individual large airlines over $5 Billion annually.
