keady - assume this is true? Why did the B-58 Hustler fail despite its impressive speed and design? The B-58 was one beautiful aircraft, fast as greased lightning, but operational for a quite short time.
those engines hanging under the delta wing were early versions of the GE J-79, also used in the F-4, A-5, et al. Unfortunately the four J-79s on the B-58 were in individual nacelles spread across the underside of the wing. Early in its service life, this eventually very solid engine was a little finicky, particularly when in full afterburner. If either of the outboard engines experienced an engine stall, there was a 16000 lb asymmetrical thrust. This could very quickly throw the aircraft into an extreme yaw, almost a flat high speed spin. As the tail went broadside to the airstream it would tear off with that torque flipping the aircraft vertically against the airflow and the aircraft would dramatically disintegrate. At Mach 2+ there was no chance for the aircrew to eject because of the very quick pace of events. After several such incidents, and the evolution of the SA-2/SA-3 SAMs a high flying, fast but very dangerous bomber was just not acceptable. 79.2K viewsView 491 upvotesView 1 share
