Jackson Hole (JAC) Wyoming was in the SPP program for 20+ years. It was staffed locally.
During the Biden Administration in 2023, DHS rejected an extension of the SPP contract saying it cost too much and federalized TSA operations. TSA haven’t been able to hire locally and they fly in all the TSA agents for two week rotations, putting them up in hotels. It must cost a fortune in travel, hotel costs, and per diems. That financial stability allows airports to maintain normal staffing levels even when the rest of the federal government is partially closed. The program, created in 2004, remains relatively rare.
