One curious coincidence (?) is that the first route will be SFO-SIN, close the the limits of the 787-9. I don’t know how often that trip has had a fuel diversion.
Meanwhile, the first aircraft with the new cabin configuration made its first flight on 16 December 2025, and the first airframes with the structural improvements to allow the full 10,000 lbs iMTOW increase were assembled in December. I haven’t been able to determine line numbers but would bet United’s first high-premium 787-9s is one of the very first iMTOW-capable 787s. With 222 seats versus 257 on the current configuration, one might think this would be an equal tradeoff, but premium seats can be heavy so it may be that the more-premium aircraft may not have worked on SFO-SIN, where it may have the most value, without the MGTOW increase. (SFO-LHR is easy for any version of the 787-9.) -- Karl > On Mar 27, 2026, at 3:01 AM, Dan Solon via Mifnet <[email protected]> > wrote: > > !0 years sounds like a pretty sluggish learning curve for a Chief Commercial > Officer, but better late than never. > > Daniel Solon > > On Fri, Mar 27, 2026 at 6:46 AM Tom Ronell via Mifnet > <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>> wrote: > > Except that they weren't "spilling capacity" - they were spilling demand. > Chief Commercial Officer should know the difference. > > TR > > From: Jack Keady via Mifnet <[email protected] > <mailto:[email protected]>> > To: David Wardell via Mifnet <[email protected] > <mailto:[email protected]>> > CC: Jack Keady <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>> > Date: 2026-03-27T00:28:35Z > Subject: [Mifnet 🛰 75759] 10 year learning curve > > keady > > > <https://link.sfgate.com/click/44932256.214029/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2ZnYXRlLmNvbS90cmF2ZWwvYXJ0aWNsZS91bml0ZWQtc2ZvLXJvdXRlcy1idWRnZXQtMjIxNTM3ODcucGhwP3V0bV9jb250ZW50PWltZyZzaWQ9NjY0ZDM3OTkxZTQ5ZDdmNTQxMDUzNDEzJnV0bV9zb3VyY2U9bmV3c2xldHRlciZ1dG1fbWVkaXVtPWVtYWlsJnV0bV90ZXJtPWJyaWVmaW5nJnV0bV9jYW1wYWlnbj1zZmd0JTIwJTdDJTIwdGhlJTIwZGFpbHkmc3RuPW5m/664d37991e49d7f541053413B954f0e11>United > says ‘wrong aircraft’ at SFO hampered business for 10 years > <https://link.sfgate.com/click/44932256.214029/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2ZnYXRlLmNvbS90cmF2ZWwvYXJ0aWNsZS91bml0ZWQtc2ZvLXJvdXRlcy1idWRnZXQtMjIxNTM3ODcucGhwP3V0bV9jb250ZW50PWhlZCZzaWQ9NjY0ZDM3OTkxZTQ5ZDdmNTQxMDUzNDEzJnV0bV9zb3VyY2U9bmV3c2xldHRlciZ1dG1fbWVkaXVtPWVtYWlsJnV0bV90ZXJtPWJyaWVmaW5nJnV0bV9jYW1wYWlnbj1zZmd0JTIwJTdDJTIwdGhlJTIwZGFpbHkmc3RuPW5m/664d37991e49d7f541053413B8427d4d1> > > > > Client Challenge > > <https://link.sfgate.com/click/44932256.214029/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2ZnYXRlLmNvbS90cmF2ZWwvYXJ0aWNsZS91bml0ZWQtc2ZvLXJvdXRlcy1idWRnZXQtMjIxNTM3ODcucGhwP3V0bV9jb250ZW50PWhlZCZzaWQ9NjY0ZDM3OTkxZTQ5ZDdmNTQxMDUzNDEzJnV0bV9zb3VyY2U9bmV3c2xldHRlciZ1dG1fbWVkaXVtPWVtYWlsJnV0bV90ZXJtPWJyaWVmaW5nJnV0bV9jYW1wYWlnbj1zZmd0JTIwJTdDJTIwdGhlJTIwZGFpbHkmc3RuPW5m/664d37991e49d7f541053413B8427d4d1> > > > By Tim Jue > > San Francisco serves as the launch hub for the “premium-heavy” fleet, where > executives say demand — especially on long-haul routes — has outpaced supply. > > “We’ve learned over the 10 years that by having the wrong aircraft, we were > spilling capacity left and right,” United’s chief commercial officer told > SFGATE. > > > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Revised: 20250507 > > You are receiving The Mifnet because you requested to join this list. > > The Mifnet is largely a labor of love, however the infrastructure isn't > exactly cost-free.
