Airline Fuel Crisis

Global airlines slash 2026 profit forecast on fuel shock from Iran war

The global airline industry nearly halved its 2026 profit forecast on Sunday,
citing conflict in the Middle East that has driven up fuel costs, disrupted key
air ‌corridors and exposed the fragility of a sector operating on thin margins.
The International Air Transport Association, which represents more than 370
airlines accounting for about 85% of global air traffic, said in its annual
report that it now expects the industry to post a combined net profit of $23
billion in 2026, well below a previous projection of about $41 billion and down
from $45 billion in 2025. Gabriel Araujo, Luciana Novaes Magalhaes, Rajesh

High fuel costs to trigger airline failures and consolidation, industry chief
says

Soaring jet fuel prices driven by conflict in the Middle East are likely to
push more airlines into bankruptcy and spur more sector consolidation this year
and next, the head of the global airline body said on Saturday. Global airlines
‌are grappling with higher fuel costs driven by the U.S. and Israel’s war with
Iran, which has choked jet fuel supplies and disrupted key air corridors,
forcing costly detours. Budget carriers have been among the hardest hit,
lacking higher margin revenue streams such as premium cabins, high-paying
travelers and credit card loyalty programs. Joe

L.A. Mayoral Primary

Nithya Raman surges past Spencer Pratt in L.A. mayor’s race, closing in on
runoff with Karen Bass

Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman surged past reality television
personality Spencer Pratt in the city’s mayoral primary election Sunday,
capping off a five-day turnaround after she fell behind to Pratt on election
night. Raman now sits in second place with Pratt in third, according to the
latest vote count from the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder. Raman had 27.1% of
the votes counted so far, and Pratt had 26.7%. Both are vying to compete in a
Nov. 3 runoff against Mayor Karen Bass, who garnered 34.7% of the vote as of
Sunday, and whom the Associated Press already determined has qualified for the
runoff. David Zahniser & Noah Goldberg/Los Angeles

‘Bring ‘em on’: Delta wants United’s crown over the Pacific, too

Delta Air Lines is the nation’s most profitable carrier, but its hungry rival,
United Airlines, is far bigger over the Pacific. Delta’s new president, Peter
Carter, says that just won’t stand. “We want to become stronger, better, faster
in the trans-Pacific, and we want to become the leading U.S. carrier” across
the Pacific, Carter told CNBC in an interview here during the International Air
Transport Association’s annual meeting. “Ultimately ... the real goal is to
become the leading global carrier, which is a pretty audacious goal.” Leslie

United Airlines CEO says affluent passengers are still spending

United Airlines Holdings Inc. Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby said affluent
travelers continue to spend on air travel despite a sharp rise in fares,
supporting his confidence that demand for premium products can withstand higher
prices. Air fares have climbed about 20% this year as airlines grapple with
soaring fuel costs tied to the conflict in the Middle East. Yet Kirby said the
carrier has seen far less resistance from consumers than he had anticipated.

United Airlines CEO rips into Rolls-Royce for lack of support

United Airlines Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby tore into engine supplier
Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc at an annual gathering of industry executives,

Southwest sticks with Boeing as MAX 7 delay pushes service to 2027

Southwest Airlines expects Boeing's long-delayed 737 MAX 7 to enter ‌revenue
service in 2027 and remains focused on the MAX family rather than adding
another aircraft type to reduce risk, Chief Operating Officer Andrew Watterson
told Reuters on Saturday. Asked about Airbus's A220, Watterson said Southwest
was focused on the MAX. "Diversification doesn't come through a second fleet

April sees dip in air passengers

Passenger traffic was down at local airports in April as the impacts of higher
fuel costs and shortages of Transportation Security Administration agents
slammed the air travel industry. Overall, 7.22 million travelers went through
the gates at Los Angeles International, Ontario International, Hollywood
Burbank and Long Beach airports in April, down 3.7% from the same month last
year. Two of the four airports - Hollywood Burbank and Long Beach - posted
drops of nearly 10% in April compared with last year, while LAX reported a drop
of 3.1%. Ontario International reported a small decline of about 1,100
passengers, or 0.2%, to 574,500.

  * Meanwhile, on the air cargo front, the results were more positive:
overall air cargo tonnage at the four airports was up 4.5% in April compared to
the same month last year. Air cargo tonnage at LAX was up 4.2% in April
compared with the same month last year, while Ontario was up 5.3%.

More airlines suspend LAX routes due to high fuel costs

American Airlines is joining the list of airlines suspending flights to and
from Los Angeles International Airport this summer. It announced a temporary
suspension of nonstop flight routes out of LAX to Cleveland, Columbus,
Pittsburgh, and Washington Dulles airports. The suspension is set to last
through August and September due to rising fuel prices resulting from the
conflict in Iran. American Airlines is not alone in this decision. In April,
Norse Atlantic Airways canceled all of its summer flights out of LAX to Europe,
including destinations like London, Paris and Rome. Allegiant Airlines also
canceled its LAX operations in January, rerouting flights out of Hollywood
Burbank Airport instead. Lily Wright/Los Angeles

The battle for control of the Nashville airport

The Metro Nashville Airport Authority is scheduled to meet in special session
on Wednesday, June 10th. There are only two items on the agenda. The first is
whether to sue the state of Tennessee over a new law that gives the state, not
the city of Nashville primary authority to appoint members of the MNAA board.
The second item is to discuss which law firm the board will hire to represent
its interests in the lawsuit. Control of the airport authority board is
important because that board, which is currently comprised of people who were
appointed by the mayor of Nashville and confirmed by the metro council, is in
charge of the airport's future including hiring the president who runs the
operation day to day. Scott Couch/Fox17

Trump arch will need red lights, FAA says

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Trump administration’s plans to
construct a 259-foot-tall arch less than a mile from Washington’s Ronald Reagan
National Airport would likely not pose risks to aviation safety. But evaluators
recommended that red, blinking obstruction lights similar to the ones atop the
Washington Monument be added to the design - a common measure for large
structures that go up near airports. “The hypothetical building, at the filed
heights listed above, would have no significant adverse effect on airspace” or
navigation procedures into and around the airport, evaluators wrote in a

World Cup 26

L.A. stadium workers vote to strike days before the World Cup

Around 2,000 hospitality workers at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium overwhelmingly
voted to authorize a strike, their union said Friday night. The stoppage,
authorized by 96% of voting members, could occur at any time, though union
officials made it clear that the U.S. national team’s opening World Cup match
against Paraguay on June 12 would be an opportune moment. If workers walk off

World Cup poses an unprecedented security challenge at a fraught moment

The World Cup, a 48-team, 104-match behemoth kicking off this week in Los
Angeles and across 15 other cities in the United States, Mexico and Canada,
presents an unprecedented security challenge, with more countries, games and a
larger footprint than ever before. It also comes against the backdrop of the
U.S. and Israel’s war with Iran, mounting political violence in President
Trump’s orbit and growing fears of artificial intelligence-fueled disruptions,
creating a complex threat environment for authorities. Jake Offenhartz, Michael
R. Sisak & Rebecca Santana/Los Angeles
