"The Navy is sitting at a unique time in its history. It recently released a
detailed shipbuilding plan on May 11, 2026. Not since the announcement of
the 600-Ship Navy of the 1980s has a Navy shipbuilding plan acquired such
political and economic significance. The Navy has the political backing from
the President to expand and fix its fleet and a request before Congress for
multiple tens of billions of dollars. What could go wrong? Well, the
blueprint for the so-called "Golden Fleet" was released to the Congress and
industry right after the Navy was decapitated by the abrupt firing of the
Secretary of the Navy.

"This leadership vacuum underscores a deeper structural crisis: a widening,
unbridgeable chasm between the Navy's strategic rhetoric and its actual
acquisition priorities. Proponents are using the plan to justify a historic
cash infusion, arguing it is the only way to arrest the rapid decline of
American naval supremacy. Yet, throwing hundreds of billions of dollars at a
broken system will not buy security."
