US closes probe into 2024 Delta Air Lines meltdown sparked by CrowdStrike
outage

The Trump administration said on ‌Monday it had ‌closed an investigation,
without seeking any penalties, into a July 2024 meltdown at Delta Air Lines
‌sparked by a global outage from CrowdStrike that disrupted the travel
plans of 1.3 million customers. The Biden administration opened a ‌probe
into the incident after other major carriers were able to resume normal
operations much ‌faster. A U.S. Transportation Department spokesperson said
the review showed ‌that "Delta's passengers received prompt refunds,
adequate baggage assistance, and appropriate assistance for passengers
‌with disabilities.” David Shepardson/Reuters

Spirit Airlines acquisition bid submitted by Mooney International, company
says

A Texas-based company called Mooney International says it has formally
submitted a bid to acquire Spirit Airlines and related assets. In a
statement, Mooney International said its proposal would combine operations
involving Spirit Airlines, Mooney International and SEAir under what it
described as a shared focus on affordable and accessible air travel. If the
acquisition is approved, Mooney International said it would seek to
maintain the Spirit Airlines brand, expand affordable travel options,
invest in fleet and technology improvements, and create stronger
connections between Spirit Airlines, Mooney International and SEAir. Zachary

Why Southwest Airlines flight attendants are battling management over this
aircraft seat

Southwest Airlines is facing more scrutiny after a major policy change, but
it has nothing to do with angry customers. The airline’s flight attendants
union is “disappointed” after the company said it would allow all employees
to access spare cabin jump seats, according to Sam Wilkins, first vice
president of Transport Workers Union Local 556. In a statement shared with
The Dallas Morning News, Southwest, which is based at Dallas Love Field,
confirmed that it is “re-opening the cabin jumpseat for non-revenue travel
to eligible employees later this year.” Jordan Parker/Dallas Morning News

Skydiver reported near LAX, conjuring memories of ‘jetpack man’

More than five years after a series of mysterious “jetpack man” sightings
in the airspace near LAX, another possible airborne human rattled air
traffic controllers Sunday. Shortly before landing at LAX around 2:40 p.m.
on Sunday, a military transport Gulfstream jet pilot told air traffic
controllers that they “just had a potential skydiver around 4,000 feet,”
per audio from ATC.com. Air traffic control responded with evident surprise
and asked for clarification. “We just had somebody cross above us around
4,000 feet in a wingsuit,” the pilot responded. Terry Castleman/Los Angeles

Santa Monica Airport: Housing measure won’t be on the November ballot

Voters in Santa Monica will not see a measure on the November ballot aiming
to allow 3,000 affordable housing units on one-quarter of the land for the
city’s soon-to-close airport. Supporters of the housing initiative had
until mid-June to submit 7,038 signatures in order to qualify for the
November 2026 ballot. They now say they will not meet that deadline.
“Community volunteers are continuing to gather signatures,” said Rachele
Smith, a spokesperson for the hospitality workers union Unite Here Local
11. Smith said proponents now aim to submit enough signatures by Aug. 12 to
qualify for the ballot in November 2028. David Wagner/LAist

Stewart Airport looks to minimum revenue guarantee to lure airlines back

With passenger totals shrinking and only two airlines currently operating
at Stewart International Airport, regional leaders are trying a new tactic
to attract carriers: a minimum revenue guarantee. The Hudson Valley
Economic Development Corporation, a public-private partnership that assists
businesses in relocating or expanding in the Hudson Valley, is helping
facilitate the creation of a fund designed to reduce the financial risk for
airlines that begin service at the airport. Currently, only Allegiant Air
and Breeze Airways fly out of Stewart, mostly to Florida and a few other
Southern destinations. Max Rosen/Albany Times Union

DIA CEO Phil Washington reflects on never-ending construction, federal
threats and a career in transit

After a long career in transit - from highways to trains to aviation - Phil
Washington is hanging up his hat later this summer. In his current position
as head of Denver International Airport, he’s overseen unprecedented
growth. One of his final decrees was to finally solve the airport’s
"original sin", in his words. Last month, he announced the airport will
repurpose its underground tunnel system to work as pedestrian walkways to
get from concourse to concourse, alleviating pressure on the internal train
system. Paolo Zialcita/Colorado Public Radio News
