Alan,

 

Surely Toronto was a relative backwater of sorts until all the language stuff 
in Quebec.  That caused many companies and other drivers of economic activity 
to drive on down the 401 from Montreal to Toronto.  Add to that the related 
influx of immigrants into Ontario, et voila!, YYZ overtook YUL/YMX.

Cedar Point (largest amusement park in the Midwest, I believe) is in Sandusky.

 

Regarding Toronto (and all of my grandparents were from Toronto),

as I recall Toronto was an absolutely 

boring city with wall-to-wall-to-wall

blue laws up until maybe sometime in

the 1960s.
