Hello Enda and Oxia,

You requested information on how you can proceed with reports and
localization. Since the information would be helpful for the entire
community-- I thought it best to answer your question on the mailing
list.

I apologize in advance for the length of this email. :-)

[Background for the rest of the community:
As you know, our MFI partner Enda and their Mifos specialist Oxia have
been working hard adding new features into Mifos to support their
requirements. They are wrapping up the feature development work and are
now ready to start building reports and localizing the s/w for their
needs. Because the core Mifos team is actively working on these areas--
Oxia had questions about how they can proceed.]

On localization, the Mifos core team has finalized their technical
approach and will be sharing this with the community shortly. We are
actively checking in code to support internationalization. However we
are determining dates for when this work will be complete and when you
can start the process of localizing Mifos into French. We will get back
to you with target dates for this and should know more by the beginning
of the year.

On reports, there are two questions to answer: How to build your
"Admin" (now called "account") reports and how to build your analytical
reports. I can provide you details about how to proceed with the Admin
reports and will need to get back to you with info about the Analytical
reports.

Some background for the community:
Enda has 2 types of reporting needs-- Admin reports that are super
simple reports linked from the loan account page and Analytical reports
which track performance metrics and will be accessed from the Reports
Tab. Both types of reports will use the same BIRT tool to design the UI
template-- but they will need to retrieve data from Mifos in different
ways.

(*) Analytical reports are reports that can, and will likely have to,
query non-real time data (likely data up until the previous night) to
minimize performance impacts on Mifos. We are still determining how
these reports should best query the data in Mifos. For now, you can
begin building the UI templates for these reports using BIRT-- but will
need to put in dummy queries or sample data in there for now.

(*) Admin reports are reports that need to access realtime data. The
data they query is very simple and straight-forward-- and we don't have
any concerns about performance impact of running these reports. The UI
templates for these reports should also be built in BIRT and they should
access the data through the hibernate layer. ThoughtWorks China built a
few sample reports in this way-- you can look at what they did as an
example.

Beth Mazur is a PM on my team who is driving the reporting module in
v1.1. If you have questions about the approach to take for building the
admin reports-- feel free to ask her on this list.

Also, another member of the team-- Bart Berning-- has been learning the
BIRT report designer. He will also be working to document some "how-to"
information on the wiki side. Feel free to ask him questions on this
list as well.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,
Emily.
