I dont see an issue with you going ahead and at least trying this, make the changes needed so that application talks to MariaDB instead of MySQL - start with clean scheam and let the fly migrations build up the database from scratch.
Use the right connector for maria db (replace connector/j with what is appropriate) see build.grade
talk the right dialect (hibernate/jpa) to maria db - see infrastructure.xml
