On the heels of RHOK in December, we had a number of different individual and corporate volunteers who had begin development on mobile app prototypes - we’ve them into a holding pattern (http://www.openmf.org/rhok-recap/) until we had some more concrete requirements from a direct implementing user that we could build towards.
Your task would be to synthesize and document mobile requirements from a series of MFIs into use cases and a functional specification. Primarily this is identifying and prioritizing what are the core processes and activities in Mifos X that should be mobile-ready. Once we have these documented, we can connect the developers and point them to which areas of the API they need to build a mobile interface for. We’ll also have usability guidelines and hopefully some visual design recommendations for mobile apps coming from Deanna/ThoughtWorks.
Secondarily I would also like you to document the basic use cases that a mobile app must support (i.e. - logging in, displaying client, etc) that would be common across any user - I would like to get volunteers re-engaged and not have them wait till we have a entire specification on a mobile client ready.

Currently we are OS-agnostic but Android or a cross-platform app is the best choice given availability and affordability in our market.
Other tasks include:
- Offline: Sussing out what data must be made available offline as this has come up often as a key improvement over the current Android app for the legacy Mifos codebase
- Recommendations on mobile interface frameworks that could be used - i.e. ODK or X Forms, etc.
Out of Scope for this project
- SMS integration - which is being tackled separately (but we could use your input there as we’ve been discussing building everything versus leveraging a tool like FrontlineSMS or RapidSMS
- Mobile Money Integration - separate project.
