Shekko, The BIRT tool we are using in Mifos is the BIRT Web viewer. It does work and there are many people who are using it successfully.
However, there may be some issues where things work in the birt reporting tool that don't work in the birt web viewer. The best place to get information about what may or may not work is from the BIRT website. Personally, I've not used data set stored procedures in BIRT (didn't realize you could even do that). I would try to move back toward something simpler, like basic SQL queries and see if you can get past the issue, then work toward getting more complicated. Lastly, I would check logs as much as possible and try to make BIRT print as much debug information as possible.
