Hi Gayl, On the TestServers list that Ed mentioned, you'll see a link to this test server which is running the 1.6 release: http://ci.mifos.org:8110/mifos/.
I'll be updating the demo server within the next couple of days when it is idle. Also, you detect the Mifos version by looking that the Admin/View System Information page.
