Gayl and Milan,
Unfortunately that's correct. You have to have a multiple of the
individual meeting schedule. Mifos was built around the concept of
meetings so the repayment schedules are more tightly coupled with the
meeting schedules.
We would eventually like to remove this altogether and have, as you
suggest Milan, completely separate schedules that are not related. This
has been logged as an improvement in Jira.

My problem is not quite at the stage of setting the repayment schedule.
When I'm creating a loan, on the screen right after the selecting the
client where you select the Loan Instance Name, I am only able to select
the loan types where the repayment schedule is a multiple of the
individual meeting schedule.

To clarify, if LSIM is turned on, the client is an individual, and no
group or center is assigned, should it still be required to match the
individual's payment schedule to the individual's meeting schedule?
If the answer to the question to that is "Yes", is LSIM only meant to
disable the linkage between the group meeting schedule and the
individual's payment schedule?
I ask because my desire is to delink all meeting schedules from payment
schedules entirely.
