Never experienced an issue with running scripts, or even using fetch. Bear in mind I would keep this to a local network and not try to perform this over a WAN. You are absolutely right about keeping the scripts simple and contained also.
Code versions normally do not have a consequence if the changelog is observed (for script updates), then again, the only time anyone should really be upgrading any production gear is if the features listed or bug fixes are needed and have been thoroughly vetted in a lab environment.
