We're planning to build out a new town with 5 towers, and would like
to do a "ring" backhaul topology. We're debating on whether to go layer
3 (ospf, etc) or layer 2 (hwmp+?). We would either put PPPOE
termination at the main tower (and filter out everything else on the
backhaul net); or relay dhcp from each AP to a central dhcp server and
route out each AP.
We have a pretty good idea how to accomplish the layer3 ring, but see
some potential advantages for layer2 hwmp+. Has anyone used it
successfully in a scenario like this? Any gotchas, or better alternatives?
We use PPPOE extensively now, it works very well for us, and I prefer to
stay that way. But I am open to other ideas if the advantages outweigh
the costs of a less-homogeneous network .
