Hey Terri,
I am a fan of backwoodssolar.com. Give them a call and they give good
advice. I no longer have any relation to them as the father in law is
now retired from there.
I attached a .gif of my schematic. There have been some minor changes to it:
1. Solar panels are now 24v
2. I added 2 additional panels
The batteries keep your gear running 24/7. They don't care where they
get their charge from.
AC Power -> DC Charger -> Batteries -> Equipment
Solar -> DC Charger -> Batteries -> Equipment
I have the following for an off-the-grid system:

MORNINGSTAR TRISTAR MPPT CHARGE CONTROLLER

The same site also has the following when I plug in a genset (in your
case, commercial power)
Utility (Generator) power

IOTA 12 VOLT 55 AMP Charger

Batteries
|
Equipment

Basically a two part question I guess. In looking at solar, I want the hardware
to stay up during the transfer of power from the grid to the batteries and back
again. I assume that the momentary switch will drop the power enough to cause a
reboot or the boards to hang up which would mean a truck to roll to the tower.
I want to avoid that.
So those of you who do solar, how do you deal with that switch over?
I have talked to a few solar companies and so far they don't have a clue other
than sizing up the battery bank to operate an APC with the mikrotik and other
equipment on that. Since the APC draws a whole lot more than all the network
hardware this really raises the cost.
Thanks,
